Ofsted 'will be critical of schools not using pupil premium effectively'

Sir Michael Wilshaw has warned schools that they must be able to demonstrate how they are using the pupil premium to improve achievement in disadvantaged pupils.

His comments follow publication by Ofsted of a report showing how schools are using the funding, in which half of schools surveyed say it has made little or no difference to the way they operate.

Sir Michael said: 'We will be very critical of those schools that are not thinking long and hard about the use of the pupil premium... There is a wealth of good practice out there in terms of how you raise achievement and how you raise achievement particularly of youngsters from poor backgrounds.'

Neil Short outlines what Ofsted will look for during inspections in terms of schools' pupil premium spending.
