Introduction

Positive Thinking helps you to steer children’s emotional development in a positivedirection. It offers exercises and emotional development activities designed to prepare young people to take up challenges in an affirmative manner, through it’s method of teaching positive thinking in a positive classroom.

Summary of contents

A positive attitude, in the face of challenges, can open a range of doors leading to different outcomes and opportunites. However, we know it is not enough to simply tell a young person, or anyone else, to be positive.

Positive Thinking aims to prepare young people to positively take up all challenges that lie ahead be they small or large, welcome or unwelcome. It takes a comprehensive approach to helping young people to maintain their self esteem and wellbeing. It is divided into fifteen pre-planned units that are accompanied by a range of features that include:

  • fictional stories designed to highlight issues and provoke discussion
  • an ongoing gallery of role models conssiting of people who have triumphed over adversity
  • circle time discussion prompts
  • drama exercises and activity pages
  • a game that is designed to reinforce the value of being positive.
It invites young people to consider themselves as ‘mental athletes’ who can overcome the obstacles they face. It fits comfortably within or around SEAL initiatives and PHSE programmes. The programme format provides the facilitator with:
  • a session overview
  • learning objectives
  • resources
  • activities
  • a plenary session
  • ideas for further development.
Topics covered include:
• helping young people to find ways of turning disappointments into opportunities
• offering a conceptual and metaphorical framework for framing a vision of personal growth and development
• facilitating the realisation that it is possible to gain from many difficult situations
• empowering students to face all the challenges that life offers in a positive manner.

The book comes with a CD-ROM from which all resources can be printed.

This resource is suitable for use with a variety of groups and settings from standard-sized classes of 30 to smaller set-ups – for example, non-mainstream pupil referral units. Young people within the age range of 10 to 14 years will probably find the activities of most benefit.

The content is extensive and fits into a number of curriculum areas, topics, issues and concerns, such as biography, ability and disability, diary writing, black history month and anti-bullying week. Activity pages, as well as being part of a theme, can also be used as standalone activities.
