Schools urged to adopt three-wave approach to SLCN intervention
Outgoing children and young people's communication champion Jean Gross says that 'schools lack information on what works for children with speech, language and communication difficulties' (SLCN).
In a report published at the end of her two-year post as communication champion Gross suggests that schools adopt a 'three-wave approach' to intervention for pupils with SLCN as follows:
- Wave 1: teaching that promotes all children's communication skills
- Wave 2: targeted intervention in small groups from trained TAs for children with language delay
- Wave 3: partnership with specialists.
Gross also said that teachers should adapt their day to day teaching to meet the needs of pupils with SLCN, rather than relying on TA support.
Information of interest to Sencos can be found on page 12 of the report.
