In a report published at the end of her two-year post as communication champion Gross suggests that schools adopt a 'three-wave approach' to intervention for pupils with SLCN as follows:

• Wave 1: teaching that promotes all children's communication skills
• Wave 2: targeted intervention in small groups from trained TAs for children with language delay
• Wave 3: partnership with specialists.

Gross also said that teachers should adapt their day to day teaching to meet the needs of pupils with SLCN, rather than relying on TA support.
