"The Child Protection and Safeguarding Handbook for Schools is a comprehensive guide detailing the school's statutory duty in safeguarding children and promoting their welfare following the serious case reviews which influenced the development of a national framework for child protection, followed by the Education Act 2002

The introduction offers a brief overview of some of the children that have lost their lives at the hands of their abusers and the lessons that can be learned from the serious case reviews in relation to improving collaborative, inter-agency practice.

The handbook is divided into four subsections which cover aspects of inter-agency working, shared responsibilities with partner agencies, a quick reference guide in child protection and an extensive training toolkit for school staff. These materials can be used to ensure all staff become adept, both in their safeguarding knowledge and confidence to carry out their role within the safeguarding process.

An accompanying DVD assists the training process within schools and includes a 40 slide PowerPoint presentation, which can be customized to include the school's details and the designated safeguarding staff.

Policies and laws which have influenced safeguarding are covered in the handbook as well as the ethical considerations that have to be acknowledged when dealing with vulnerable young people. Modes of referral and the importance of accurate documentation are also included.

This is an essential handbook. A must have for all school settings."
