A 12-session programme for managing stress in your school

Managing Stress: A Comprehensive Programme to Support Young People provides a thorough programme for secondary schools to support students in coping with stress.

The world is a highly pressurised and rapidly changing place, which influences the mental, physical and emotional health of all those who live within it. Stress affects children from all social backgrounds and contexts. Stress-related illnesses are no longer confined to ‘grown-ups’, but appear to be affecting young people and children at an increasingly high rate and young age.

Managing Stress: a comprehensive programme to support young people by Tina Rae aims to address the stressors associated with adolescence, bringing alive a range of stress related problems to participants and enabling them to empathise and problem-solve within a safe and nurturing context.

Summary of contents

The 12-session programme designed for secondary school students aims to address the stressors associated with adolescence but it is important to highlight the fact that it cannot be regarded as a substitute for individualised interventions delivered by appropriately trained clinicians.

Structure of the Programme
• Introduction
• PowerPoint presentation and notes (including training opportunities)
• The 12-session programme for students:

Session 1: Introductory Session
Session 2: Personal Image Stressors
Session 3: Transition and Change Stressors
Session 4: Self-Esteem and Confidence Stressors
Session 5: Health and Wellbeing Stressors
Session 6: Peer Group Stressors
Session 7: Family Stressors
Session 8: Relationship Stressors
Session 9: Loss and Bereavement Stressors
Session 10: Study Skills and Learning Stressors
Session 11: Exam Stressors
Session 12: Future Stressors

Each session, apart from Session 1, is structured as follows:
• Introduction and Aims
• Icebreaker and Brainstorm
• Diary
• Questions and Problem-Solving
• Strategy Sheet
• Take Home Task
• Plenary and Evaluation

The session plans all incorporate detailed facilitator notes regarding delivery and approaches. The accompanying audio CD contains all the diary entries which are a unique aspect of the programme. Each entry presents a specific stressor as experienced by a ‘real’ student in a ‘real’ context. The problems are consequently brought alive to the participants and this also enables them to empathise and problem-solve within a safe and nurturing context. Their own ‘real’ stressors can be dealt with in a less public forum once they have addressed the stressors of these various students.
