• Great Grandma’s tips: many traditional ways of saving money are still useful. This assembly discusses some of them.
• Keeping the heat in: this assembly discusses issues around home insulation.
• A new use for sheep wool: insulation: the Smith family are building their own house. They want it to be eco-friendly but warm and cosy in winter, too. In this assembly, the children help research the best insulation.
• Can we go by bus? The Jolly family are used to taking their car everywhere. What difference will it make to their lives to spend a week travelling by public transport?
• Shall we get some bikes? This assembly suggests that there’s no single answer to reducing a family’s carbon footprint.
• Waste not, want not: this assembly deals with the benefits of composting and the science behind it.
• Turning off around the house: this assembly suggests that the simplest way to save energy at home is to keep switching off.
• Recycling our waste at home: this assembly looks at what we can do to try to reduce the amount of waste our homes produce.

• An environmentally efficient office: this assembly looks at the ways by which modern businesses are trying to reduce their environmental impact.
• Less packaging: this assembly explains the uses and importance of packaging – as well as their downsides.
• Ugly fruit: this assembly asks the question: why do we expect our fruit to look perfect every time?
• Fairtrade and local sustainability: the assembly looks at how Fairtrade and local sustainability contribute to more environmentally friendly food production.
• Life cycle assessment: this assembly looks at the need to consider a building’s environmental impact over the whole of its lifetime.

Theme 4: Adventures in recycling

• Goodbye old friend: recycling our car: currently about two million cars and light vans are scrapped in the UK each year. This assembly investigates what happens to old cars when they die.
• Recycling plastic: plastic presents a recycling challenge. This assembly deals with the increasing use of plastic and the difficulties this brings.
• Paper, bottles and tins: the assembly explains what happens to paper, bottles and tins after they have been collected for recycling.
• Using recycled computers in developing countries: this assembly looks at the way recycled computer hardware is being made available in rural Africa.
• Grand Designs: children learn about a house that was built from old tyres. This assembly deals with the creative use of waste material for house building.
• Recycling in Europe: this assembly looks at everyday recycling projects in other European countries.

Theme 5: The Big Debate

• Electricity from the wind: this assembly asks whether wind power can provide the answer to all our problems.
• Elephant grass: can the biofuel made from elephant grass solve our energy needs? This assembly looks at the reality for the future.
• New kinds of fuel: can we find sustainable fuels for our vehicles? This assembly deals with the problems and challenges of developing sustainable hydrocarbon fuels.
• Nuclear energy: this assembly asks whether nuclear energy is the answer to future energy needs.
• Solar panels: are photovoltaic panels (solar panels) the future of electricity generation? Or are there other ways of using the sun’s heat?
• Luxury goods: this assembly discusses our love affair with luxury goods such as fast cars that damage the environment.
• Electric cars: this assembly discusses the green credentials of electric cars.

Theme 6: From small beginnings

• The Passive House: what is a ‘Passive House’ and what can we learn from the idea? This assembly takes the idea of a tea-cosy and considers how it can be applied to a house – so that if you insulate a house properly it will hardly need any bought-in energy to keep it warm.
• The Christmas tree man: Christmas trees are grown, used once and discarded. This assembly explains how one person manages to do better.
• Bee crisis: this assembly reminds us just how important bees are to the maintenance of our food supplies.
• One person can make a difference: can one person really make a difference when it comes to saving the environment? This assembly shows how some individuals really are making a difference.
• Allotments: this assembly explains how the ownership of a plot of land to grow food has been important to people for thousands of years, and is still a part of life for many, even in an industrialised country like ours.
