Promoting the development of study skills at KS3 and KS4

Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills is designed to promote the development of study skills for students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, regardless of levels of ability or achievement.

It provides an eight-session programme for young people, which aims to introduce and teach the key study skills essential for effective academic performance and achievement. All students can benefit from these specific strategies for organising, remembering, prioritising and undertaking assessments. These processes are the underpinnings of strategic learning and are essential for accurate and efficient study.

This programme is intended as a fun and stimulating means of developing the kinds of study skills necessary to achieve success in today’s ever stressful and ‘test bound’ curriculum.

Benefits

Why use Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills?

The 8-session programme detailed in this resource is designed to promote the development of study skills for students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. Students are introduced to strategies for self-monitoring – they are encouraged to self-reflect, self-monitor and become more responsible for their own learning and the critical analysis of the format of tests and examination papers. A key feature of the activities is the highly visual and practical approach adopted and the emphasis upon developing a personal style within the framework of empathic peer and adult support.

Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills will enable students to:

  • understand and appreciate the need to develop study skills
  • develop a range of skills to support learning, studying and revision processes
  • gain further insight as to the nature of their own learning styles
  • understand the need to develop motivation, reflection and independence
  • increase motivation, reflection and independence
  • develop an appropriately personalised approach to study and revision
  • become aware of the stresses associated with study and revision and begin to self-manage more effectively
  • increase their ability to memorise and recall information
  • utilise skills such as self-checking, editing, monitoring and planning in revision
  • become more responsible for their own approaches to learning and assessment situations
  • develop a more critical analysis of the format of tests and examination papers/questions
  • increase the level of confidence in their own abilities to cope with the emotional and practical aspects of the learning and assessment processes.

Summary of contents

Teaching and Learning Effective Study Skills is structured in eight sessions with activities for students at both KS3 and KS4. They are not designed to be delivered in eight ‘lessons’ but rather presented as a bank of resources to be utilised over the course of a term, preferably in the lead into an examination period, for example, SATs or GCSEs. The resources can also easily be adopted for use during other stages of the academic year in order to support students of all ages in improving learning and study skills.

The eight-session student programme is structured as follows:

  • Understanding coursework and schoolwork
  • Organisation, time management and planning
  • Learning to Learn: preferred learning styles
  • Revision strategies and techniques (I): mind mapping for KS3 & KS4
  • Revision Strategies and Techniques (II): subdividing, minimising, storytelling and recipe cards (KS4); acronyms, questions, key words, post-its (KS3)
  • Revision Strategies and Techniques (III): walking the line, movie review, teaching to learn (KS4); design a poster, SEGE mnemonic, the burger plan (KS3)
  • Revision Strategies and Techniques (IV): discussion group, describe and draw, empathic learner, pass master (KS4); file cards, spidergram, mnemonics, constructing a balanced written argument (KS3)
  • Self-review and dealing with exams

Each part of the programme includes detailed facilitator’s notes describing the nature, content and delivery of each activity. There are a wide range of practical and written tasks which incorporate a range of learning styles and teaching approaches. Supporting appendices include the following:

  1. Information sheet for parents/carers.
  2. Information sheet for staff.
  3. Information sheet for students.

The information sheets are intended as an introduction to the topic of study skills and aim to highlight the rationale for the programme alongside briefly outlining the contents. The PowerPoint presentations provide a fuller picture of the programme and aim to ensure that parents/carers, teachers and students alike understand and are familiar with the key aims of this resource.
