Summer schools improve HE access for disadvantaged pupils

An independent report on the impact of the Sutton Trust's summer school programme for disadvantaged more able pupils has concluded that the scheme improves access to higher education.

The programme is funded by the Sutton Trust and partners, and is open to Year 12 students who hold at least five GCSEs at grades A*-C and come from a non-traditional higher education background (for example, attending a low-performing school). Summer schools are held at Durham, UCL, Imperial College, Nottingham, Bristol, St Andrews and Cambridge.

Researchers at Bristol University found that attendance at a summer school increased the chances of students applying to and enrolling at a leading university: 76% of attendees did so compared to 55% with similar profiles who did not attend the scheme.
